Our whole school topic for the Autumn is 'Escape to the Chateau' and our focus for this will be based around castles, myths & legends.
This term’s project takes a historical focus on castles, examining what life was like within them centuries ago. Pupils will investigate how people in Welsh castles lived, worked, and protected themselves, while also making comparisons with life today. They will study myths and legends linked to castles including mythical creatures and the symbolism of dragons, linking these themes creatively through expressive arts activities.
We will be looking at communities and the diversity within them and comparing our modern day lives with those in the paths considering similarities and differences. This will give us the opportunity to celebrate differences between ourselves as individuals and the communities we live in and those around us.
Some of the ideas we have thought about are:
- Investigating castles and their structure. This will also include how castles were constructed, protected and how successful this was.
- Locating and comparing castles within wales and beyond.
- About careers of people who worked in a castle and the equivalent modern day career;
- Looking at Welsh myths & Legends and the mythical creatures associated with these, especially the significance of dragons
- Using dragon features to inspire our creativity and work in expressive arts and design work.
- How to present information using a variety of media (sketching, use of digital tools, 3D modelling etc)
In class, we always start our topic by discussing the topic title and thinking about what it means to us
within the 6 Areas of Learning Experience.

Health & Wellbeing
Expressive Arts
Science & Technology
We made notes of all our ideas and came up with lots of learning questions.
Mrs Porthouse will then use our ideas to create 'exciting' and 'interesting' lessons
because our ideas are BRILLIANT!
